Young Person's Guarantee

Our Youth Guarantee supports young people in school to reach sustained positive destinations by providing a range of opportunities and working with partners to align provision across the region. Each school is responsible for overseeing the planning and delivery of wider employability and the development of skills for life, learning and work.

The Family Firm programme offers long term advice, guidance, support and work coaching for our care experienced young people.

Working closely with teams across the council, local businesses and other employability partners, we've an opportunity to make a difference to the life of a young person and to fulfil our corporate parenting responsibilities by:

• building confidence
• growing their skills
• helping them get on the first rung of the career ladder
• enhancing their experience
• offering a long term support network for training and work
• providing a range of opportunities including taster days, work experience, training, pre-employment support, access to employment, as well as traineeships, modern apprenticeships and support moving into further education

An apprenticeship provides hands on experience, a salary and the opportunity to gain accredited qualifications while you work, even a degree! As an apprentice you'll work alongside experienced colleagues, learning from them on the job to gain job-specific skills. The Scottish Youth Guarantee programme will support young people in transition from leaving school to reach sustained positive destinations by providing a range of opportunities, programmes, courses and support across the authority area.

The programmes provide a range of individual, small group approaches, to help develop the skills, confidence, awareness and understanding to reach a positive destination in the young person's employment journey.

How to get involved?

If you're a young person who has an additional support need, disability, mental health condition and are living in East Renfrewshire and would like to get support with finding work or further training, email worker@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk.

Training can support you to develop new skills, allow you to apply knowledge you have in practical situations or enhance your skills in a certain area. Training can be specific to your needs, your chosen vocation or your skills-gap, and will make you more employable.

The work of our partnership ensures a range of training opportunities exist to help develop the skills, confidence, awareness and understanding needed to help individuals to get into work and to progress in-work, through the development of their job skills.

We give a wide range of employment opportunities for young people and several different pathways into employment. Employability partners work with a wide range of local businesses to help maximise the number of opportunities available within the region. We are geared towards identifying opportunities in a wide range of sectors, in order to help build-up our economy and invest in the continued development of our local workforce.

Positive Pathways offers employability support to young people aged 16 to 19 who are looking to engage with education, training or employment. The programme is aimed at those who would benefit from individualised support to remove barriers, build confidence and set goals and milestones in order to secure a sustainable destination. Young people are supported 1-2-1 by an employability advisor as well as having access to a wealth of provision such as construction skills, driving lessons, barista training, an autism transition worker, CSCS training and much more.

The Youth Guarantee programme will offer you the opportunity to come together with other people (aged 16 to 24) take part in a programme of activities which will help you to gain new experiences of learning, develop new skills, confidence and resilience. The programme will also help you to identify how you can overcome the barriers that prevent you from gaining employment or accessing training. 

The programme will cover a range of topics and activities which include lifestyle, mental health and well-being, lifeskills, digital skills, volunteering and outdoor learning. 

Through taking part in this you will broaden you experiences of leaning, develop new skills and gain a range of accredited awards.
